Adventuring with Friends

Pictured Above: Rachel and her friend Angeline can be spotted in the back left of this group photo taken at a recent Paint & Sip event held at The Redd Dog in Tacoma, Washington. Read on to hear about this adventure.

Rachel has been very lucky to have made several friends through her gym, Orangetheory Fitness. Last week, she had several adventures, two of which were with these friends and will be spotlighted in this week’s My Monday Memo.

First up is an old favorite of Rachel’s, the New Dungeness Lighthouse in Sequim, Washington. Rachel’s friend, Jennie, was interested in this hike but had never done it before. When Rachel learned this, she quickly found a day and time with a low tide that would work for both of them and a plan was set.

This lighthouse is located at the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge and only 70 miles from Rachel’s home in Tacoma. The lighthouse is at the end of a spit. A spit is a coastal landform. This stretch of beach is connected to land on one end and the open water at the other end. The lighthouse is very near the end. Hiking to the lighthouse is just over a 5-mile trek each way and all on the beach. All on the beach if you pay attention to the tides that is. If you don’t time it just right to hike at low tide, you chance having to climb through dangerous driftwood to get back to land.

Jennie and Rachel were given a beautiful day and had a fantastic hike to the lighthouse. They enjoyed a picnic lunch once they arrived and then took a tour of the lighthouse spending a few minutes at the top with the lighthouse keepers who were replacing windowpanes. Rachel looks forward to more fun adventures with Jennie, as she is also a lover of hiking and exploring.

Next up was something Rachel had on her 24 for 2024 list of things to try this year, a Paint & Sip. It’s been years since she tried painting, and it would likely have only been paint by the number. She assures you, this wasn’t pretty, as she has little to no artistic skill. She signed up and got an extra ticket just in case someone would want to join her. Luckily, her friend, Angeline, was interested in an afternoon of painting. The image of the day would be a ‘radiant sunflower.’ Below is what their painting was to replicate.

The instructor for the event was Rebekah. Rebekah was a very good teacher. There was a large group of attendees (additional tables full of painters were off camera in the photo below), and she was having a few difficulties with her microphone. Even so, she did a great job and provided great instruction and positive feedback to all.

Angeline and Rachel had a blast attempting to paint their sunflowers, and each put their own unique colors to the canvas. Angeline was far braver than Rachel and tried out a variety of colors and textures. Rachel learned what she already knew, she is not artistic. Why is it so hard to paint? Either way, it was fun. Rachel was glad that Angeline was able to join her making it even more fun than it would have been had she been alone.

Once they finished up, Rebekah took a photo of them with their finished paintings. Angeline says she will definitely hang hers in the hall at home. Rachel already has hers sitting on her desk at home, a nice reminder of a fun afternoon with a friend. Until next time, be well.
