Zombie Run 5k

Thanks to Pierce County Parks & Recreation, another Zombie Run 5k is in the books. This is an annual fun run held at the Nathan Champman Memorial Trail in Puyallup, Washington. Pierce County has a handful of fun runs throughout the year, of which Rachel has participated in some, including the more recent Donut Dash.

Rachel had participated in the Zombie Run 5k last year and it was the first time since her revision spine surgery that she had attempted to jog a full 5k. She had just joined Orangetheory Fitness a few weeks prior to this event last year, and while it was a slow 5k, she did jog the full thing. She recalls it being extremely difficult to breath during the 2023 5k. She was very excited at the time to have just accomplished the event. After this year’s run, she realizes just how far she has come.

One of the things Rachel really enjoys about this run is the beauty of the trail and the fun vibe. Not to mention the zombies along the way. One of them got her good this year when they jumped out from behind a tree as Rachel turned a corner. She may have shouted “Oh, shit!” giving the zombie a good laugh.

Pictured Above: A couple of the zombies along the trail during the 5k. A couple of others were far scarier and jumped out as joggers passed by. Talk about adrenaline on top of adrenaline. Good times.

Last year she was solo, this year, she was lucky enough to have a few friends from Orangetheory Fitness join her. Coach Christine and her husband, Alex, joined in the fun, as well as Bill, aka Nacho Libre. Bill was the only one of them to go all out and dress in costume. As seen below, he took on the persona like the real deal.

Even though Bill didn’t win the costume contest (which was rigged), he was the winner in the eyes of Christine, Alex and Rachel. Rigged, you say? Yes, rigged. It is always a kid that wins, right? Yep. Rachel thinks they should split the contest into two and have one adult winner and one child winner. Maybe even a third for the pets, as there were some cute dogs in costume.

This year’s Zombie Run 5k was another fun fun run and Rachel feels lucky to have the ability to participate, and to be joined by friends. Next up in the run category is a half marathon in December. Will she run the whole 13.1 miles? Probably not. Will she finish it? Likely. Finishing is the goal. Anything more than that is a bonus. For now, she will continue to enjoy the ability to participate at all. Until next time, be well, and Happy Halloween.
